There are probably a few readers out there that don’t, so we thought we’d give you a little rundown.
You’ve probably seen players lock shoulders into a pack and form what is called a scrum, right? But when and why does it happen?
The purpose of a scrum is to restart the game fairly, safely and quickly when a light foul, offense or stop in play has happened. In short, if play can’t continue due to a foul, the other side gets the feed of the ball through the forming of a scrum. Both sides compete for the ball being put in, so the scrum itself is the work of the eight big, powerful forwards.
So, now that you know a little more about the scrum, you can sit back and enjoy the game a bit more by understanding why it’s happening.
